The legacy of apartheid in South Africa has led to insurmountable inequalities among Black and White citizens of the country. Here are the facts ...
Apartheid was a system of oppression implemented by white colonialists/settlers from 1948 until 1994 (15,727 days). It had a lasting legacy of wealth inequalities and systems of segregation that keep Black South Africans in poor communities.
Historically, apartheid was used by Whites to steal land and resources by segregating non-whtie communiites in unfavorable land.
Today, one can see the impact by looking at the levels of inequality in wealth and poverty.
Today, one can see the impact by looking at the levels of inequality in wealth and poverty.
These legacies have disproportionately left many Black South Africans in poverty. In 1998, they made up nearly ALL of the general population in poverty
The legacy does not end at wealth inequality. In the near end of apartheid, the racist policing system has produced massive disparity in incarceration rates among white and Black South Africans...
Take a minute to really digest that previous stat. White South Africans make up ~ 10 percent of the generation population but about 1.6 percent of the prison population.
A better world is possible.
Here are some solutions
Solutions require
- Acknowledging the devestating impact of apartheid on all Black South African citizens by those responsible and those benefiting from the institution of apartheid
- Supporting the call for reparation for all Black South African citizens impacted by apartheid
- Destroying the current unequal system that arose from the racist institution and building an equitable system that aims to bring justice.
